Absolutes and Art

The interviews will continue!!! Soon!!! Every now and then, I may post some of my own thoughts. Recently I have been thinking about absolutes in art. Everything is NOT relative. Is beauty really in the eye of the beholder? I am going to listen to a podcast from apologetics.com about this subject but I wanted what to hear you guys thought first.
So, what are your thoughts?

Magically yours,

Yes, you are shameless. I gave the new site a quick look-over. Need to go back to watch the movie. Looks great though. Very professional. Chelsey said you were terrific at the Waterford Week Variety Show.
Interesting that you raise this topic. I've been reading about beauty this week and how IMPORTANT it is to God. How essential it is in our lives. Tough question. I do believe beauty is defined. For example, some things are not beautiful (ie. a decaying body, a violent act... sin is not beautiful). But different people call different things beautiful. Some people treasure hymns, consider them "lovely." Others think an old fashioned hymn is a horrid thing; they'd prefer to rap about Jesus (or maybe put the hymn in rap form.)
You ought to visit Robert's blog (link is on main A4TH blog). He posted about a sculpture he is doing. The subject matter of his piece is "ugly," because it has to do with Jesus being scourged. We'll get to see that piece soon. Will it be "beautiful?" Can something be excellently done and not beautiful? Does the excellence count as beauty? Hmmm. I'm sure rambling here. Looking forward to hearing others' thoughts.

It seems to me that something ugly can be written about in a way that is ultimately beautiful. If the ultimate point of the piece of art is glorifying to God, then I think that the goal has been achieved; and beauty has been captured. So much of the human experience cannot be categorized immediately as beautiful or glorifying to God...When we dig a little bit and look under the surface of the topic, there are glimpses of His hand that can reach into our hearts and point us towards the source of all things beautiful. This is just my present perception on the matter, and I may be off-base. It just seems to me that the present reality and/or perception holds so much that can be presented to show how God's hand is active...

Have a cup o'joy and a fresh tase of the bread of heaven...

O.k. I had to look up beauty.
Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) - Cite This Source
beau·ty
1.the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest).
I thought this definition interesting in that if we were to use this definition then it does depend on the person and his or her "mind".
From what I have seen in the art world people can get fixated on things in that the subject is not beautiful but the way it was captured is a thing of beauty...the lighting, the composition, the angle, and more all of which can make a beautiful piece of art. It does not matter if the subject is beautiful to our natural eye, the way the artist captured it can make it beautiful. As God saw when He created, "it was good". If it is good, it does not always matter what the subject is. It can still be beautiful.

What is beauty? Get yourself over to the main blog and watch Bill's video. That'll answer the question!!!

Beauty is in the MIND of the beholder. A blind person can have visions of beauty or be moved by an idea that put images in their head just as we see, they also see. Beauty is found in the quality of the work. We all have different ideas of what beauty is. Water down any subject and you can make it beautiful. But the reverse is also true....
We can take things that God gave us as beautiful and twist them into the worst of the worst...

AS for shameless self promotion, hey who knows
more about our work than our selves. We should be free to speak about our own work. Why wait for the world to discover how great we are, or how great the message of Jesus is for us.
